Introduction to the Workshop:
Globalization of Innovation-Systems.
The Challenge for Small Developed Countries,
Hotel Rebild Bakker
12th - 13th June
Dear researchers and civil servants.
On behalf of Danish Business Development Council, it is my privilege to welcome participants from no less than 12 countries, including Italy, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, Uruguay, USA, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark, to this workshop. We appreciate that you are all sufficiently enthusiastic about the arrangement to use a Saturday and Sunday for this purpose.
On the initiative of Jan Fagerberg, Bengt-Åke Lundvall and Dieter Ernst, we are here to discuss the consequences of disruptive changes in the international economy - that is, the process of globalization - on economic performance, employment and policy in small, open economies.
We will compare six small European and and three small Asian countries, all highly developed, in order to open up for a broader process of policy learning.
It is the hope that the discussions at this workshop will be the starting point for further work, generating high-quality comparable data on different responses to globalization in such countries.
The Danish Business Development Council is highly concerned with the issues of globalization and innovation. And we are happy to contribute financially to this workshop.
Not only because of the enlighting presentations and discussions that we can expect here in Rebild this weekend. But also because we are supportive to the plans of further comparative work in this area. As policy advisors we hope, that such work could provide some new and unconvential insights which might help to stimulate innovations in institutions and policies.
In the following pages you will find the programme, list of participants and a written document for this workshop. The document contains contributions from several of those doing presentations or comments at the workshop. The written contributions are organised in the same order as the presentations and comments at the workshop.
The Danish Business Development Council is thankful to the efforts of Jan Fagerberg, Bengt-Åke Lundvall and Dieter Ernst in arranging this workshop.
Yours sincerely
Poul Skovgaard
Chairmann of the Danish Business Development Council.
