Keld Laursen is waiting for the conference to start. He is quite happy to be at the conference even though he was supposed to be in a somewhat warmer climate in New Zealand at about this time.

Peter Maskell gives a welcome speech. He stresses that this year there are more participants than ever before. Hopefully this is a sign of a higher interest in both the research area and the DRUID academy.

Brian Loasby is giving the first presentation. The title of the paper presented is 'Industrial Dynamics: Why Connections Matter'. As always Brian Loasby gives an inspirering presentations that makes most people think about their research yet again.

The next session is a parallel session. Here we are in session 2. At this point Lars Bo Jeppesen is presenting his 'The end-consumer as a source of innovation' paper. A bit to the right Bo Carlsson is listening interested. He is going to discuss the paper by Virginie Pignon who is a bit late due to fog over Paris airport. Gary Fields (third on the left) has just presented his paper called 'Communication, Innovation and networks. Business Organization, Regional Development and Production Networks of Swift Meat Packing and Dell Computers'. (the large photo is somewhat blurry)

After the first few session the participants needs a small break. During his break dinner is served in the restaurant of the conference center.

The menu of this evening was turkey as the main course. The dessert was a homemade sorbet.

During dinner many of the participants meet for the first time. Introductions was made and quickly many seemed to be quite comfortable with the conference.

The evening session was chaired by Esben Sloth Andersen. First Alessandro Nuvolari presented his paper titled 'Industrial Revolution: The case of the Cornish Pumping Engine'. Afterwards Paolo Seri (in the picture) presented his paper 'Losing areas and shared mental models: Towards a definition of the cognitive obstacles to local development.

Paolo Seri has just finished his presentation and is ready for any question the participant may have. Some questions was put forward. But he answered them without any sign of hesitation.

After the evening session some of the participants went to have a few beers in the bar. Here the Junior participants (from the left) Michiel van Dijk from Eindhoven, Marco Giarrantana from Pisa and Daniel Kirchert from Munich is engaged in a little discussion concerning the topic of the day.

After the morning sessions Meric Gertler is presenting. The topic of his presentation is 'Best Practice? Geography, Learning and the Institutional Limits to Strong Convergence'. The session was chaired by Volker Mahnke from Copenhagen Business School.

Bent Dalum seems to take a special interest to Meric Gertlers presentation. Recently he has become interested in the economics of geography and earlier he did a lot of work within the economics of specialization and the literature of convergence and divergence. this may perhaps explain his interest.

Paolo Seri (to the left) and Piergiuseppe Morone (to the right) have just heard the presentation of Meric Gertler. Now they are going to have lunch and afterwards go for a walk in the forest in which the conference center is located.

Between presentations many things are discussed. Here Bent Dalum gives some of the PhD-students a few thoughts on one of the subjects. He also takes the opportunity to remind them of the ETIC sessions and the Marie Curie training program.

Bjørn Johnson presents a paper he has written with Bengt-Åke Lundvall. It is called 'Why all this fuss about codified and tacit knowledge?'. It is a rather critical comment on a paper written by Cowan, David and Foray which has recently been published.

The chair of the afternoon sessions, Keld Laursen tries to organize the question put forward to Bjørn Johnson and Bengt-Åke Lundvall. Bengt-Åke Lundvall is ready for the comments and seems to be relaxed.

Bo Carlsson, chairman of the DRUID Advisory Board, points out that the two authors must make sure to clearly distinguish between diffusion of knowledge and knowledge transfers.

After a long discussion concerning codification of knowledge all participants went to have a bite to eat. Of cause the discussions did not end here. Many reflections were made during dinner.

The menu started of with baked salmon. Afterwards a piece of roast beef was served. The dessert was a rather light creamy piece of cake.

During dinner Peter Maskell took the opportunity to give a speech. He emphasized that it had been a pleasure to organize this years DRUID winter conference as all the participants had submitted their papers in due time. Also he congratulated Lizzie Juel, the secretary arranging the conference, on a job well done. She had been able to tackle any problems that had come up even though it was her first time arranging the conference.

After realizing that Peter Maskell had forgot to give some credit to himself, Bengt-Åke Lundvall made everybody stand up and salute Peter. Of cause everybody did that with delight.

After dinner everybody went into the bar area to have a cup of coffee of whatever they were longing after. At this point the discussions got somewhat more social.

After the morning sessions a panel discussion was arranged. The topic was 'Taking Stock, Looking ahead'. But first most of the participants needed a coffee break.

After lunch the participants are preparing to go to Copenhagen. Only the delegation from Aalborg are left behind. They are going west instead of east.

After the participants arrived in Copenhagen the Copenhagen delegation had arranged for reservations at a restaurant. Afterwards some of the participants went for a walk in Copenhagen. This picture illustrates how dark it is in Copenhagen in January i Denmark.

The Next day some went for a smalll walk just to see Copenhagen by day. The Daylight really seems to have another effect on the city. In the picture from the left kneeling it is Adrian Peluffo, Deborah Tappi and Michiel van Dijk. Standing from the left is Christian Zelner, Alessandro Nuvolari, Paolo Seri and Piergiuseppe Morone. They seem to enjoy the fresh danish wether. This is by one of Copenhagens most famouos fountains.

On the train from Korsør to Aalborg, Bengt-Åke Lundvall and Bjørn Johnson are reading some student projects they are going to evaluate during the next week. It seems the senior researchers never takes the time to relax a bit.
